A troubled heart can feel like a full-time job.

We slow down with John 14:1–14 and let Jesus speak directly into fear, uncertainty, and that nagging sense that you do not have the map. Hearing the passage in both KJV and NIV, we focus on Jesus’ first move: he doesn’t deny the trouble, he redirects our trust, calling us to believe in God and believe in him with the same certainty.

Then we sit with the disciples’ honest confusion. Thomas asks the question most of us have asked in our own way, and Jesus answers with one of the clearest claims in Scripture: “I am the way and the truth and the life.”

We talk about what that means for Christian faith today, why it matters that no one comes to the Father except through Christ, and how Philip’s request to “show us the Father” gets answered in a grounding way: anyone who has seen Jesus has seen the Father.

We also dig into the practical edge of the passage: Jesus promises “greater works,” and he invites us to ask in his name so the Father is glorified. That raises big questions about miracles, the Holy Spirit, and prayer in Jesus’ name.

We keep it simple and straight forward; God is the one who moves. Our faith matters, but God’s will and plan set the direction.

We close with a clear challenge to choose the better option, pray for what you need, and live your faith where your neighbor can feel it.

John 14:1-14 - King James Version
1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

Welcome And Purpose

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to the Christ. Thank you for taking a quarter of an hour out of this day to enjoy the presence of Christ and the words of Christ. Today let's read a section of Scripture, discuss what it means, and how it applies to our lives. I hope that God will speak to you through my words, and more importantly, through His Scriptures, and will bring you closer to Him. I am blessed and thankful to have this time to speak with you, and I thank you so much for being with me here today. Today's scripture is John chapter 14, verses 1 through 14. The King James Version reads as follows. Let not your heart be troubled. Ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you, and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest, and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me. If ye had known me, you should have known my Father also, and from henceforth ye know him and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father. And how sayest thou then, showest the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words that I speak unto you, I speak not of myself, but the Father that dwelleth in me. He doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me, or else believe me for the very works' sake. Verily, verily I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also, and greater works than thee shall he do, because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it. The NIV says it this way. You believe in God, believe also in me. My father's house has many rooms. If that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas said to him, Lord, we don't know where you're going, so how can we know the way? Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him. Philip said, Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us. Jesus answered, Don't you know me, Philip? Even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father, how can you say, Show us the Father? Don't you believe that I am in the Father and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you, I did not speak of my own authority. Rather, it is the Father living in me who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. Let us pray. Lord, we thank you for this day. We thank you for the freedom and the ability to discuss your word and enjoy your presence. Help us to understand your word and your will for our daily lives more fully. We ask that you bless this discussion of your word and that it will speak to someone who needs to hear from you. We ask that you use these words to bring someone closer to you, and that you will touch their hearts to love others through action in your name. That each of us will do something to show love to their neighbor in action as well as in word. That each of us will do our best to represent you to the world. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. The verses for today are beneficial. In today's scripture, we see Jesus giving wisdom and advice to his disciples. Jesus seems to be trying to give them some last-minute instruction before his time runs out. The feeling I get here is kind of like the parent who is trying to give some last-minute cliff notes for life to their child as she's leaving to start her life in another state. She's very confident and feels more than ready for the world, but the parent knows that she doesn't even know what she doesn't know. She has yet to learn how much she has to learn. Of course, in our scripture today, Jesus is the one who will be leaving, and his disciples don't even see it coming. I know that Jesus knew that everything would work out to the glory of God the Father, but just as Jesus himself did not want to go to the cross, just as Jesus did not desire to experience the pain and humiliation of a public Roman execution, neither did he want his disciples to experience what was before them. I believe Jesus was preparing them to make their experience as easy as possible. And now we have access to this wisdom to ease our lives as we make our way through life as best we can. So let's get right to it. In verse 1, Jesus is asking his disciples not to worry. He's telling them to believe on him with the same certainty that they believe on the Father. I can just imagine the concern and love on his face as he's lovingly pouring wisdom into his oblivious disciples. Jesus even tells them he's leaving, but that he will be back to get them and take them to his father's house. It's a little sad and a little comical to read how confused they are. In verse 5, Thomas says, We don't know where you're going, so how can we know the way? Jesus responds to him with one of the foundational truths of the Bible and of Christianity. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one goes to God the Father without Jesus. Of course, the disciples are still confused. It seems obvious to us today, but we know how this part of the story unfolds. We have the benefit of knowing their immediate future. But what's more important for us today is not so much the disciples' reaction to the wisdom Jesus gave them, but rather our reaction to it. In verses 12, 13, and 14, Jesus tells his disciples and us that if we believe on him, we will do a great work, and even greater works than Jesus Himself did. We know that the disciples did great things after the Holy Spirit filled them. We also know that there were many miracles performed by Jesus and by his disciples that we are unaware of. But what about us? Can we do great works in Jesus' name? Yes, we can. I believe we are limited by only two things our faith and God's plan. When miracles are performed, they are performed by God. We ask God for miracles through Jesus. Miracles are performed by, in my opinion, the Holy Spirit within us. Can we command the Holy Spirit to do anything we wish? No. And wouldn't we be pitiful if we could? No. We ask for works to be done within God's will and within his plan. Not only for us, but for the world. Jesus prayed to not go to the cross, but only if it were God's will, and only if it were within God's plan. He went to the cross and died for us because it was within God's plan. If we need health and energy to start a church, and it's God's will that we start that church, but we're sickly and we're tired, then we have two options. We can tell the Lord no and stay sickly and tired, or we can ask God to give us what we need to get up, get out, and start that church in His name and to His glory. Always take the second option. Ask in Jesus' name within God's plan and watch the Holy Spirit move in your life. Watch the miracles happen. God does not force us, he gives us choices and options and lets us choose. The best option is always to choose God and to remain within his will and plan. But it is up to us. Choose God. Pray for what you need, pray for what God shows you. If God shows you a situation that needs an awareness and an acknowledgement of Him, pray for that. If He shows you a situation that needs your presence or action, pray for that. But all that you do and pray for, do so in the name and will of God the Father. That concludes our scripture discussion for today. Thank you for spending this time with me talking about, learning about, and enjoying Christ. It is my hope that God has used my words to touch you today and has brought you closer to Him. Let us pray. Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
